Saturday Wildlife

Ken and I went to the Desert Park (see my earlier blog post on the Desert Park) yesterday afternoon to see their summer bird show. They normally have one in an outdoor amphitheater with a wide variety of birds but it's too hot at this time of year.

This show featured three nocturnal birds - my friend the magpie, a Southern boobook owl, and this barn owl.

I was happy to learn that in Central Australia, magpies don't display the swooping behavior that can be such a problem in the more suburban areas! see My blog post on being attacked by a swooping magpie in Central Australia...

We learned that the Barn Owl is found on all continents except Antartica.

One of the amazing things about my camera is that I was able to take these photos in an almost completely black theaere, with just the one spotlight on this branch, because it has an ISO setting that goes up to 25000.

Driving home, we saw this beautiful Goanna (about 18 inches long) as roadkill, which I'm sure made a nice dinner for some nocturnal bird.

Once back home, Ken fixed a delicious pasta dish for our dinner using fresh basil from the garden. Notice how the leaves have been munched by (presumably) the locusts.
