River of Chocolate

The Todd River runs through the middle of Alice Springs. Most of the time it is nothing more than a dusty dry wide spot, but this last weekend we had a tropical rain storm come through and the river was a "banker."

They used to say that if you see the Todd run three times, you're a local, you're here for good. This was my first., and counting! These boys were out with their dad enjoying throwing rocks into the water.

Two of the four roads that cross the river were flooded; the two that weren't are built up as regular bridges.

Ancient "River Red Gums" grow all up and down the river bed.

Both a vehicle road and train tracks run through The Gap (aka Heavitree Gap); Ken sometimes rides his bike to work through it as well on his way to work. This spot is less than a mile from our home.

The river flows wide and shallow; south of Alice Springs it just disappears into the desert sand.

  1. Wow, that is a lot of chocolate syrup! I will have to eat some chocolate in honor of your seeing the Todd run (although I'm hoping it doesn't happen three times - we want you to come home eventually :-) ).

  2. I grew up in Mt Isa (Qld) and when 'the creek' (Leichardt River) was running, we used to say look at that, you can see the bottom... floating on the top!
