Desert Park

Today being Labor Day, Ken and the other Americans had the day off work. It was a beautiful day with clear blue skies and pleasant breezes. After a nice morning phone call with Marsi (while Ken mowed and edged the lawn) we took off to the Desert Park.

One of my favorites lines in the must-read Australia book by Bill Bryson, "In a Sunburned Country" is the one where his friend says in astonishment, "You mean, there's a manmade desert, in the middle of the desert, and they charge you money to see it?"

The good news is that, as locals, Ken and I pay once to get in and have as many more visits as we want free for the rest of the year. We went once for about an hour and just saw one (excellent) show. We went today for several hours and walked through the three main exhibit deserts.

They show a River desert, a Woodland desert, and this one.

Quite a few birds live in the park, both wild and in aviaries. We also saw four kangaroos, many nocturnal animals in a special house where they manage the light levels in reverse, and this guy.

A nicely done aspect of the park are the interpretive exhibits such as this signage which was right near where we saw the real deal:

We had a lovely time and will definitely return.

Yes, the sky really is that blue and the setting here is stunning with the red rock mountain range in the background.

  1. Glenda, Thank you for the beautiful pics and education on Austrailia, a place which I don't know enough about, unfortunately. Did you ever figure out what they were saying in that newspaper article a few posts back?

We had other plans so I was unable to attend the BABES meeting which you hosted in the spring. ---Gloria

  2. See the comments on the Hoon post for the explanation; it just shows what a language barrier there is!
