Stuff, Lots and Lots of Stuff

Our households goods shipped by sea (via Los Angeles to Singapore to Melbourne with various truck and train intermediary transportation) will be delivered here to our home in Alice Springs tomorrow.

We stored a LOT of things in California. The items coming tomorrow are those we thought we didn't want to live without for two years. The funny thing is that in the meantime, we have been quite happily getting along with basically just the Survival Kit provided to us by the JDFPG.

In case you are wondering what constitutes a Survival Kit for the Outback, it included:

- sheets, pillowcases, blankets, bedspreads, pillows;
- towels, washcloths, hand towels
- dishes, pots and pans, silverware, knives, glasses and cups,
- measuring spoons and cups, dish drainer, water pitcher, cutting mats, salt & pepper set, sugar bowl;
- radio, toaster, coffee pot;
- trashcans, laundry baskets, an ironing board and iron, a bucket, brooms, dustpan and a mop!

Back in July, in Saratoga, we (with a crew of about twelve movers) filled an entire twenty foot container with Stuff.

The movers arrived with a small shuttle truck that would make many trips up and down the steep driveway over the next three days.

Ken met the truck as it came up the final switchback.

The movers did an excellent job protecting the beautful hardwood floors.

The entire kitchen was packed before I returned home from an errand. About half of the contents are on their way here and the other half went into long-term storage.

Many books, bookshelves, and all of Ken's CD collection will arrive tomorrow.

Ken supervises the loading of the shuttle truck.

Fabric, more fabric, yet more fabric is on its way, hurray!

Given the size of the crew and the number of hours they spent at the house, well over 100 hours went into packing and loading our sea shipment. Tomorrow, they estimate they will spend two to three hours here unloading and unpacking it.

  1. Trash can???? They don't sell those in Austrialia? We expect you to have all of that fabric (well, most of it) gone, and in a new form; i.e., garments, household items, etc. Have fun.

  2. The survival kit is just temporary until your own things arrive and you have time to shop for those all-important trashcans. It will all go back next week.

  4. Hi Glenda, thanks for sharing the whole packing experience with words and pictures. Having been to your place once, it was fun to see all the photos and how the process unfolded. It looks like you (and Ken) have done a wonderful job of managing this project in a most efficient way.
