Sew What

After much anticipation, the so-called "air" shipment arrived, a mere six weeks after leaving Saratoga.

I have been particularly looking forward to having my sewing/embroidery machine, my serger, and box of selected sewing notions.

The electrical system here is different so I have to plug them in using this transformer.

Some day I will enjoy sewing clothes and art projects, but my first priorities are home related items.

The good news is that the furnishings provided with the house are very functional, mostly clean, and free.

The less-good news is that the dining table chair seats are made from pink plastic or vinyl and the couch is a dark burgundy. Pink and purple are probably my least favorite colors.

I plan to cover them with fabric.

Every window here has vertical blinds, which is fine, except that they are also made from plastic.

I'm not sure exactly what I"ll do for the windows, but some kind of fabric coverings are in order.

Obtaining fabric may be a challenge. The one fabric store in town does not carry "home dec" fabric. They have a decent selection of quilting cottons, but charge in the neighborhood of $20 per yard for it. Our sea shipment contains a selection of my fabric, but I don't recall which home dec fabric, if any, that I packed.

I went to a thrift store and bought several sets of white cotton curtains which I plan to re-purpose. (I don't want white curtains any more than I want plastic blinds.) I can dye and/or embellish it to my taste, which should be fun. To start with, I'm working on a pattern for chair covers.

In any case, this project is one of many things to do here that will keep me busy!
