Same, Different #3

Both San Diego and the Bay Area are known for world class sailing and sailing regattas. Alice Springs, too, has its annual boating regatta.

The Todd River runs through Alice Springs. Henley-on-Thames is a city in England which is home to the annual Henley Royal Regatta. Combine the two and you get the name of our local race, the internationally renowned "Henley-on-Todd."

The slight difference is that we have NO WATER in the river most of the time. That, fortunately, has not stopped the local fun. Adaptations, however, have been made.

Ken and I spent Saturday at the event, enjoying the fun, photo and food opportunties.

A tight sailing heat.

It was a hot day.

The one man kayak event was over all too quickly, and the heat worked up a thirst.

The next event is known as the "Tour d' Todd."

According to the weather people, the temperature reached a record for August.

The bathtub race was won by the team that put the smallest, lightest person in the tub.

Although water was a scarce commodity, beer flowed abundantly.

The news reports that there were 5000 people in attendance.

Most of them were thirsty.

Many of the attendees wore hats to keep off the sun.

Some found that the combination of a stylish hat and a cold beer did the trick.

Others enjoyed the shade provided by the event organizers.

A final event involved the three Rotary clubs in town competing as pirates, vikings, and navy sailors.

A good time was had by all.

  1. Wow, that was amazing! Australian ingenuity at play! And looks like the American knew a good time (and beverage) when he saw one :-).
