Well, it's just one trip after another here.
Australia has six States and one Territory. My goal is to see them all before returning to the USA!
State/Capital City/Travel Status
South Australia/Adelaide/December 2009
Tasmania/Hobart/February 2010
Victoria/Melbourne/March 2010
Yes, I'm off to Melbourne tomorrow for a week. Ken's staying home this time. I'm joining the bi-annual get-together of Pattern Review Down Under (an internet sewing group) for the weekend and plan to do some serious shopping for a few days afterwards. The biggest department store we have in The Alice is Target. It's only real competition is K-Mart. Rumor has it Melbourne even has a Costco!
Future travel will hopefully include the rest of the states:
Western Australia; it's capital is Perth.
Queensland; I believe it's capital is Brisbane (pronounced Brizbun) although I may focus my visit around the Great Barrier Reef area.
and New South Wales/Sydney.
Darwin is the head of the government for the Northern Territory. Alice Springs is in the Territory. (Conversations are underway to draft a State Constitution, so maybe someday it will be a real state.)
And that concludes your geography lesson for today. I doubt I'll post while out of town so check back in a couple weeks.

Ooh! I hope we will met up in Melbourne. I'm going to some of the Pattern Review happenings.
ReplyDeleteSorry to disappoint you, but there is a lot more than one Territory! For starters there is the Australian Capital Territory (where our capital Canberra is), which is pretty important. Then the Aust Antarctic Territory (we claim about a third of that continent). Then there are another six off-shore island territories (including Christmas Island and Norfolk Island) and one strange little mainland one (Jervis Bay Territory.)
I hope you do manage to visit all the states while you are here. All the territories would be a lot trickier, though.
