Cutesie

I love being here in Australia and truly have no complaints... however, there is just one little thing...

Truck drivers are called truckies,
Postal workers are called posties,
Trash cans are called wheelies,
St. Vincent de Paul's thrift store is called Vinnies,
Woolworths (a grocery store, not a five and dime) is called Woolies,

Need I go on?

  2. We love to shorten words here don't we?
    It's done with either a "y" or "o".
    Here's some for ya:
    Esky
    Bottlo
    Smoko
    (Brrmm from PRSDU) aka Karen

  3. And certain male groups(footballers/cricketers) give team mates surnames ending in Y or O (as brrmm says) e.g.
    Warney(Shane Warne),Blighty(Malcolm Blight) VBG

  4. So what does Esky actually stand for? Haven't a clue! If Bottlo is supposed to be short for Bottle, well it's the same number of letters. Smoko - something to do with smoking? VBG?

You Aussies are sure confusing this simple American. :-)
